This all-new pickup boasts levels of refinement and comfort that match those of the best trucks from general motors and ford. New designs from gm and ford had put them ahead on this score, but that's all changed with the 2002 dodge ram. This complete overhaul puts the dodge back on solid ground with the half-ton pickups from ford and gm. lineupdodge ram is available with two cab configurations, regular cab and quad cab. Quad cab models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 -inches longer than comparable regular cab models. two bed lengths are available, a 6-foot, 3-inch standard bed and an 8-foot long bed. Ordering the long bed only adds about $300 to the price. Long-bed models ride on a wheelbase that's 20 inches longer than comparable short-bed models. Eight-foot long beds also get a bigger fuel tank, 35 gallons in place of the standard 26-gallon tank. three engines are offered: most popular will be the 4. 7-liter v8, a new overhead cam design. A new 3. 7-liter v6 is available that's similar in design to the 4. 7-liter v8 is available. Even more massive this year, the grille distinguishes among trim levels: the horse collar is all chrome on the slt model, with a gray honeycomb center. Slt+ features a body-color grille surround and chrome cross hairs. Sport trim includes a body-color surround and cross hairs with unique chrome billets in the center. moving rearward, the new ram presents a more robust appearance than before with a broad, sloping hood and a pronounced crown that falls to the bold front fenders. A faster, raked-back windshield improves aerodynamics and water management, and gives the new ram a more modern appearance. The leading edge of the front door overlaps the a-pillar, creating a smoother transition from the front of the cab to the side. Everything is smoother and more integrated. The big side mirrors, great for visibility, are now mounted on platforms to reduce wind noise, and a channel has been specially designed to keeps water off of the mirrors. An integrated air dam improves engine cooling and air conditioner performance. standard bed length is 6 feet, 3 inches, but an 8-foot bed is now available for both cab styles. That's a bit much when trying to heave heavy gear aboard. interiorram interiors are completely redesigned for 2002. In fact, one of the biggest improvements offered by the new ram is in the area of comfort. that comfort starts with roominess. To increase roominess, dodge stole 3 inches out of the bed and added more than 3 inches to the cab. The optional leather seats are also comfortable and supportive during long drives. Three-point shoulder belts are used at all locations, including the rear center seat. A big fold-down center armrest/console comes with adjustable dividers and a power outlet. White-faced instruments with turquoise numbers look sporty and trendy, but don't offer the legibility of traditional white-on-black designs, particularly at dusk. At night, the instruments are nicely illuminated in green. the design of the audio system could be improved for ease of use. Setting a button for a station, for example, requires pressing a separate set button, rather than just holding the button down. Sliding bass and treble controls are harder to adjust than knobs when bouncing around in a pickup truck. Optional steering wheel audio controls 75) solve this with brilliantly designed buttons behind the steering wheel that are much easier to use than the awkward steering wheel controls found on gm's full-size trucks. Likewise, cruise controls on the steering wheel are easy to operate. otherwise, the center dash is a paradigm of convenience. Large heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (hvac) buttons can be operated while wearing gloves. A textured fabric is used for trim around the audio and hvac controls, somewhat similar to what's found in volkswagens, gives the center dash a nice look and feel. Just below the hvac controls is a slot lined with a rubber mat that's perfect for a wallet or other small items. A big panel below that folds down with adjustable cup holders. Overhead is a console with an effective pair of map lights, a trip computer, a compartment for sunglasses, and a compass, which every self-respecting truck should have. regular cab models come fitted with a tray behind the seats big enough to hold a large bucket. Dodge even supplies the bucket, a tray designed to carry tools and such. There's even a hook just to the right of the center dash that's useful for hanging onto a couple of grocery bags; the brits call these curry hooks. the new quad cab is quite nice. It's easy to see why. The rear seat is roomy, with enough rake to the seatback to make it comfortable for two adults. Its size also makes the rear bench seat suitable for child safety seats. Proven powertrains, ongoing refinement, new name. introductionthe 2011 ram heavy duty models, the ram 2500 and ram 3500, are comfortable and highly capable, ready for serious towing or heavy-duty hauling. Thoroughly revised for 2010, the 2011 rams boast proven technology while benefiting from some minor updates. A new ram outdoorsman model expands the 2011 ram 2500 and 2011 ram 3500 lineup. ram heavy duty models received a major overhaul for the 2010 model year along with refinements throughout. The crew cab got larger, giving ram a unique cab lineup in the segment. The ram heavy duty was restyled for 2010 to go with the new 2009 ram 1500 light-duty. The ram heavy duty is not identical to the light-duty trucks, but many interior and some sheetmetal parts are the same. The regular and crew cab interiors are also very similar. for 2011, the biggest change is the introduction of the new outdoorsman, a ram packaged for use by hunters, fisherman, campers, and boaters. The ram outdoorsman replaces the trx and is available in many ram 2500 and ram 3500 configurations. other updates for 2011 include making the in-dash vehicle information center standard on all models, and an integrated brake controller comes standard on all but the base model, a great feature. The navigation system has been updated for 2011. A factory spray-in bedliner is available, along with new colors and new wheel designs. most of the parts and technology on the 2011 models have been proven in earlier rams. The cabin was launched in the 2009 ram 1500, and the engines, transmissions and brakes are evolutionary versions of the 2009 heavy-duty models. The gasoline engine that comes standard is the most powerful base engine in big pickups. The optional cummins turbodiesel met current emissions requirements years ago. The diesel engines from both ford and gm are new, and both of them require a fuel additive the ram diesel pickup does not. We prefer the automatic, however. much attention has been devoted to ride comfort and quiet on the 2011 ram hd, and it is noticeable. The feature lists, both standard and available continue to grow, as pickups become ever-more car-like inside: heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, sirius backseat tv and so on. That said, we found a 2011 ram 3500 rode very nicely while towing a 6,000-pound trailer. the most capable ram hd pickups will carry more than 5,000 pounds or tow more than 17,500 pounds. Other pickups may better those tow ratings, but whether they actually tow any better is another story. Also, trailers heavy trailers require a different driver's license in some states. the ram heavy duty models will work for anyone who has work to do, be it hauling construction tools and materials, plowing driveways or dragging around big trailers. They remain a compelling choice for anyone in need of a heavy-duty pickup truck, and on balance are priced similarly to 2010 models. officially, chrysler no longer refers to its full-size pickup as the dodge ram. It's now just the ram. In addition, there are big horn and regional editions. Three cab configurations are available: regular, crew cab, mega cab. Ram 3500 models are available with single or dual rear wheels (srw or drw). The outdoorsman package is fairly low-impact with minimal chrome. with a forward tilt to the grille and an upward, inward point to the headlights, grille and bumper the heavy-duty nose looks like a stout blunt instrument, rather like the point on an anvil. while the style and lights are from the 1500 only the latter are the same parts. Ram's crew cab replaces the quad cab. The ultra-long mega cab uses the same rear doors as the crew but adds inches behind the doors. crew cab and mega cab both come with a 6-foot, 4-inch box.

Dodge and refinement haven't always gone together, but the durango is quiet and it rides smoothly. Its handling is stable and relatively agile. Inside is a quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated cabin. this second-generation durango is big. Its exterior dimensions place it between the chevy tahoe and ford expedition in size, but it benefits greatly from a space-efficient design. Durango can seat up to eight passengers with the optional 60/40 folding third row seat. Folding down the seats reveals more than 100 cubic feet of cargo space. And a properly equipped durango with the hemi engine is rated to tow up to 8,950 pounds. two v8s are available and both are superb. The popular 4. 7-liter v8 and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 are smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, and responsive, including a tow/haul transmission feature we like that holds lower gears longer when towing to reduce gear searching. the base model has been dropped for 2006, so the durango sxt is the entry level for the durango line-up. For 2006, dual stage front air bags and an occupant-sensing system for the passenger-side front air bag are standard. Durango's taillights are distinctive as well, looking like afterburners from a jet fighter with two big red stacked circles per side. The sheet metal is molded around them to suggest speed. chrysler has an expensive new wind tunnel at its headquarters in auburn hills, michigan, and it was used extensively when designing the second-generation durango to reduce wind noise. The motor mounts were calibrated to reduce the frequencies and harmonics of each engine. The windows have an extra layer of lamination to deaden sound. Foam is injected into many of the body and chassis crannies, which would otherwise serve as tiny echo chambers. interiorthe dodge durango feels spacious inside. Large amounts of glass contribute to that feeling along with lots of cargo space. Durango is officially classified as a mid-size suv, like the ford explorer, but it's bigger than that and inside it feels like a full-size suv. behind the second row of seats is 68 cubic feet of cargo space, equal to the total for many suvs. Put the second row down, and there's 102 cubic feet of cargo capacity. The distance between the wheel housings is 48 inches, so full-size sheets of plywood can be loaded flat. Speaking of loading cargo, this task is aided by the liftgate, which opens very easily. A power liftgate is available on 2006 durango models, a handy feature. Also, the cargo floor is relatively low, thanks to the rear suspension design. the second and third rows are notably easy to access because the rear doors open an exceptionally wide 84 degrees. The second-row seat easily flips forward with the touch of one hand, and the seatback flops flat just as easily. This is no small virtue. For 2006, a 60/40 third-row seat, large enough for three passengers, is an available option on slt and limited models. the second-row seats recline and have their own climate control, so back-seat passengers can snooze in comfort. Details are carefully thought out, including convenient grab handles cleverly molded into the stubby rear leg of the second-row seat, which ease climbing back to the third row. Once back there, a small bubble in the ceiling provides additional headroom for third-row passengers. The slt has orange-hued wood trim, while the limited presents a cleaner look with its brushed aluminum. And that trim is real wood and real aluminum, not plastic. instrumentation is clean, handsome, easy to read and easy to operate. We especially like the simple black-on-white gauges and rectangular black venetian-blind style heating and cooling vents. The center console is deep, under a removable tray. Forward of that is another important compartment designed to serve as a fast-food bin. Two integrated cup holders with removable neoprene for different sizes of drink containers are provided. we found the slt's manual heating controls and the wiper controls a bit fussy, and the high beams seemed a little lacking one wintry night. The limited model's high-tech climate-control panel with automatic temperature adjustment is bet.
